Santa María de Lavaix

The monastery of Lavaix was very important for the life of the village. The priors of the monastery decided to make Pont de Suert the capital of their domain. • The monastery of Lavaix was very important for the life of the village. The priors of the monastery decided to make Pont de Suert the capital of their domain. As time went by, the patrimony of the monastery of Lavaix increased until it became important, and the donations of the Erill family in the second half of the 12th century finished shaping the monastery.

When the social order of feudalism was established, the peasants lost their freedom and were tied to the lands under the dominion of the feudal lords, who benefited from the feudalisation process by increasing their possessions and power.

In the Vall de Boí, these feudal lords were the Erill family. From Erillcastell (their place of origin), they began a rapid social rise at the end of the 11th century, participating in the repopulation and reconquest campaigns.

The lords of Erill used the resources obtained from the spoils of war to promote the construction of churches in the Boí Valley, a way of showing their power and acquiring social prestige.

Throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries, this great heritage gradually diminished, until 1835, when the life of the monastery came to an end due to the confiscation of Mendizábal.

Some of the decorative elements found in some of the houses in Pont de Suert come from the monastery, such as some of the columns or capitals on the façades of the village's Plaça Mercadal. Other elements from the Monastery can be found in the Ribagorza Collection of Sacred Art in the Old Church, now converted into a museum.

The Abbot's Palace of Pont de Suert was the former residence of the abbots of the Monastery, as at that time the abbot was also the Baron of Pont de Suert, exercising the civil functions of the village. It is currently in ruins and most of the year it is flooded by the Escales reservoir.

When the waters of the reservoir are at their lowest levels, it is easily accessible on foot from the southern mouth of the Lavaix tunnel (N-260 road) or from El Pont de Suert along the Camino del Agua.
